The LARES VALLEY is home to many traditional weavers and farmers and is famous for home-made textiles. Huacahuasi is a traditional weaving village where hikers often try their hand at weaving. The indigenous people in the area speak Quechua and Spanish. Lares Hiking is one of the main alternative routes to the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, it is a bit shorter and a bit higher than the Inca Trail, it is accessible from Cusco. Unlike the Inca Trail, hiking in Lares does not require a permit. Early in the morning, the guide will wake you up with a nice cup of tea and breakfast. Then, we ascend to the top of the mountain of Abra Huacawasi (4300 m), where we will have a breathtaking view of the mountain surroundings, flora and fauna. From there, the Lares hike will take us downhill for 1 hour to the village of Auroruy Cocha, where our chef will prepare us a fantastic lunch. For the next 4 hours the route continues downhill to the Yanahuara campsite, it will be open roads and some uphill trails. Upon arrival we will enjoy dinner together and settle in for the night.
OLLANTAYTAMBO is an Inca city and archaeological site and the capital of the Ollantaytambo district, located approximately 90 kilometers northwest of the city of Cusco. During the Inca Empire, Pachacútec conquered the area and built cities and ceremonial centers. At the time of the conquest, it was the stronghold of the Inca resistance leader Manco Inca Yupanqui. In Ollantaytambo there are resistance terraces (to prevent landslides), not agricultural ones like in the other archaeological sites in Cusco. Today it is an important tourist attraction due to its Inca constructions and because it is one of the most common starting points of the Inca trail to Machu Picchu. 06.30 am. On this day, after a hearty breakfast and morning tea, we will hike from the campsite. We first walk 40 minutes to La Pista Central, where the bus to Ollantaytambo awaits us. The bus ride takes only 30 minutes. In Ollantaytambo we had a delicious lunch and then walked around the town and its market. You can choose to visit the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, which will give you a good idea of Inca architectural craftsmanship. After visiting Ollantaytambo, we completed the hike through Lares and then continued by train to Machu Picchu, a town known as Aguas Calientes. We checked into the hotel and enjoyed a nice dinner.
After having a very early breakfast at the hotel, we will head to the bus station to board and take the tour to Machu Picchu (30 minutes). Our tour leader will give us a 2-hour introductory guided tour of the Machu Picchu citadel. After that we have the option to climb the steep staircase of Huayna Picchu, a steep and challenging hike that takes about 2 hours and offers great views of Machu Picchu or in Aguas Calientes a visit to the new local museum or bathe in the hot springs (Not included in the price). At the end of the visit, we will descend to Aguas Calientes and then board the Expedition train to the Ollantaytambo train station. And at the station we will meet our transportation and be transferred to the hotel in Cusco.
